ABOUT

Tess Nielsen

is a National Board Certified Teacher with research interests in music, digital media, educational technology, teacher preparation, and the digital aesthetic. Locally, she is in demand as a presenter and clinician in music education technology and multicultural non-profit development.

Through scholarly activity combined with many years of classroom experience, Dr. Nielsen's teaching practice is grounded in innovative and relevant research. Her research and writing intersects over the broader paradigm shifts in the ways in which we engage with digital media.

Director of Music and Theater

NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND MATHMATICS — Morganton, North Carolina

Oversees and directs the Theater program and the NCSSM Morganton Chorale; integral Faculty member of the interdisciplinary Humanities Department. Teaches classical guitar and piano, digital media production, and theater. Advises and coaches students in performances and as pre-college competitions. NC Teacher Certification: Highly Qualified, K-12 Music with Gifted and Talented Endorsement, 2023.

2023 - Present

Fine Arts Director, Department Chair

FREDERICA ACADEMY — St. Simons, Georgia

Established a school-wide arts curriculum; oversaw concert and visual arts event planning and promotions; served as department chair. Served as a member of the Academic Leadership Team to align the school's cultural arts and interrelated programs horizontally and vertically. Taught Film and Digital Media Production, directed Music Theater Productions, and led choral arts.

Adjunct Assistant Professor, College of Performing Arts

ROWAN UNIVERSITY — Glassboro, New Jersey

Taught graduate and undergraduate level courses in the College of Performing Arts. Developed interactive lessons and engaging lectures. Served on university committees to promote the Marie Rader Concert Series. Worked closely with Rowan Community Music School to develop and promote program growth.

Performing Arts Director, Department Chair

RANNEY SCHOOL — Tinton Falls, New Jersey

Managed and evaluated faculty as Chair for K-12 performing arts curriculum development. Produced concerts, stage plays, and community arts events. Administered budget for departmental operations and events. Provided academic and creative advice to performing arts students. Taught Chorus, Music Theater, Music Theory, Music Appreciation, and Digital Media.
